Fly Fishing for Coho salmon on Vancouver Island’s west coast
Fishing in the salt chuck with lighter gear for these silver fish is an experience not to be missed!
Fighting a feisty coho, caught on a fly is exhilarating, Coho are very aerobatic. When conditions are right, with the Coho salmon feeding near the surface, retrieving a fly on the surface can induce a strike and then the battle begins. Be prepared; for as many coho win the battle as you do.
In late August, fishing at first light, with rod in hand and the coho slapping the water all around the boat sure builds the excitement levels. You can see your streamer fly on the surface behind the boat. As you watch, it looks like a torpedo surfaces and charges at your fly, you feel the hit with your hands as the rod bends, the coho turns missing your fly only to hit your partners fly! With only a fly between you and the salmon, be ready for a fight; lots of runs, you feel every head shake. Often the Coho jumps clear out of the water in an attempt to throw the hook. Sometimes they meet with success and your line goes limp and sometimes you get the feel of success as that coho is the boat.
